It wasn't so
long ago that working professionals who wanted to earn a college
degree had only a few choices, which usually boiled down to quitting
work to attend school full time or enrolling in a nights-and-weekends
program that would eradicate any semblance of a personal life. Not
surprisingly, the logistics of returning to the classroom were often
so onerous that it wasn't a practical option for many people trying
to juggle family and work responsibilities.
Now, however, that's no longer the case. "Colleges today are
offering a great deal of flexibility when it comes to scheduling,"
said Dr. Bill Pepicello, president of the University of Phoenix.
"One thing that's making it easier for people to deep their
new years resolutions is continuous schedules, which allow people
to enroll at any time rather than at two or three points during
the year. It's important to provide an education that fits the life
of working people.
Schools such as the University of Phoenix and that San Francisco
State College of Continuing Education do just that.
As an example, Pepicello cites the university's policy of classes
meeting only one night a week. "I think one reason people often
don't go to school is that it requires such time commitment,"
he said. "We want to make it practical for people to work,
manage their lives and get a degree."
